Dissonant Convergence, The 21st Century Security Crisis: Unprecedented Convergence of Threats and Risks
Exacerbated by denial and blunders in the corridors of both political and corporate power, an unprecedented convergence of risks and threats (e.g., global warming, bird flu, failed states, terrorism, organized crime in cyberspace, etc.), as well as the erosion of democratic principles and freedom of the press in the USA, has created a global 21st-Century Security Crisis that threatens both humanity as a whole and the planetary environment itself.
Richard Power, internationally recognized writer and adviser on risk, security, and intelligence, has developed a series of presentations and workshops on this “Dissonant Convergence,” which provides a comprehensive overview of these problems and a bold, new, holistic security paradigm, including practical recommendations for governments, businesses, institutions, families, and individuals throughout the world. Dissonant Convergence, The 21st-Century Security Crisis: As the Indian Ocean tsunami, the Pakistan earthquake, the London subway bombings, and the destruction of New Orleans illustrate, planetary citizens face an unprecedented security crisis: most government and business leaders are still in denial about global warming, particularly its security implications (both near-term and long-term), the failed “war on terrorism” has only aggravated the very real and imminent danger of attacks on civilian population throughout the world, the threat of bird flu pandemic increases every day, identity theft and other cyber crimes that ruin finances and destroy businesses are on the rise, etc. Indeed, the first decade of the 21st Century has brought us into greater peril than we have ever faced. Governments, businesses, and individuals have to respond, but not in old ways, not in Cold War or pre-Cold War modalities, but in bold, holistic, and right-brained ways. This presentation provides an overview of all aspects of the 21st-Century Security Crisis, and provides practical recommendations relevant to organizations and individuals throughout the world.
Spiritual Challenges of The 21st Century Security Crisis: The 21st Century Crisis, i.e., the powerful convergence of Global Warming, serious health emergencies (e.g., AIDS in Africa and Bird Flu) the disastrous “War on Terrorism,” the growth of Mega-Slums throughout the world, the rise of religious extremism, the struggle for geopolitical hegemony over energy resources, the rapid evolution of cyber crime and economic espionage, the unbridled advance of predatory corporations, etc., challenges you, your loved ones, your work force, your society itself, in new, and unprecedented ways. How Climate Change Impacts The Security of Your Nation, Your Family, and Your Business: Amazingly, even after Katrina and the record-breaking hurricane season, which many of us predicted, the corporate boardrooms and the mainstream news media are in denial. Many more people will die from global warming than terrorism, much more economic damage will be done by global warming than by terrorism. Indeed, terrorism itself, and all other security issues, especially natural disasters and health emergencies, will be exacerbated by global warming. This presentation provides an overview of the sweeping security implications (both near-term and long-term) of global warming in all regions of the world -- e.g. loss of life in natural disasters aggravated by global warming, civil unrest, food shortages, interruptions of food distribution, collapse of infrastructure, failed governments, etc. -- and illustrates how these risks will impact your business and your family. It will also provide practical checklists of recommendations for mitigating these risks and protecting both your business and your family.
The Struggle for The Freedom of The Internet: In many countries, and particularly USA, the Internet has become the best and most reliable resource for cutting-edge news and opinion about politics, geopolitics and the environment for a growing segment of the population. In some countries, this turn to the Internet is the result of tight government control over established media, i.e., television, newspapers, and radio. In the USA, the growing reliance on the Internet is the result of tight corporate control (i.e., the media monopolies). This presentation looks at disturbing trends in government and business cooperation in limiting privacy on the Internet, legislation that would make gaining and optimizing access to the Internet more expensive and therefore more exclusive, and other serious efforts to commercialize and curtail the freedom and egalitarianism vital to the life of the Internet.
Electronic Voting = Information Warfare? Bitter Lessons from The Land of the “Free”: Many countries throughout the world are embracing democratic principles, (e.g., fair elections and a free press). Many countries throughout the world are also embracing Information-Age technologies to revolutionize their infrastructures. But the intersection of democratic principles and Information-Age technologies is a dangerous one. The post-election chaos in Florida in 2000, which resulted in the loser of the national election being sworn in as President, brought to light the fragility of the electoral process in “the world’s greatest democracy.” Since then, the USA has been going down a slippery slope of unverifiable, unregulated, unaudited, and largely untested electronic voting. This presentation elucidates the numerous cyber-security issues involved in electronic voting and examines some related struggles for electoral fairness throughout the USA from Florida and Ohio to New Hampshire and Alaska. It also articulates the dangers and opportunities for emerging democracies and provides suggestions on how to “get it right.”
Why Security and Intelligence Professionals Should Advocate the Millennium Goals: This presentation explores the interrelationship between global security threats (e.g., organized crime, terrorism, racial and ethnic cleansing, religious extremism, etc.) and global social ills (e.g., poverty, lack of education, environmental degradation, exploitation of women and children, etc.). It highlights the urgent need to address global social ills in order to mitigate global security threats and explains how the UN Millennium Goals provide the means to do so. The presentation also offers tangible ways to integrate a Millennium Goals campaign into overall security strategies for organizations.
